Third Grade Community Connections

Our third grade classrooms learned about jobs in our community while practicing their interviewing and writing skills this summer.  They wrote interview questions, asked their questions, listened attentively, took notes, and used their notes to write newspaper articles.  What authentic experiences to keep our summer school students motivated!

Chef Nate Weik visited from the Landmark Cafe and Creperie.
Students asked him questions.
He answered questions as they took notes.

Students read interview questions.
They diligently took notes.

Corie Weisenberger represented Music Makers.

Corie compared two instruments.

There were similarities and differences.

Corie showed another comparison.

He explained notes and chords and played some music.

He played a different instrument.

Then he hooked up a foot pedal to his guitar.

While the loop played, he added thimbles on a washboard.

He ended by adding a drum.
The bluegrass band Corie plays with is called Frank F. Sidney's Western Bandit Volunteers. They play all over and everywhere! They have opened for David Allen Coe, will be playing at the River Roots Live festival in Davenport, as well as playing at Shoe Fest in Northern Illinois in September.  Corie shared many instruments with the students and let the children try out some of the instruments.
Kate Budde came from the Red Cross.
Everyone enjoyed her visit.

She talked about disaster preparedness.

Captain Scott Benson
from the Brooks' Street Fire Station

Smoke detectors need batteries!
Or a fire will leave you with this.

This is some of the gear he must put on in less than 60 seconds!

Thank you for the fire hats and the terrific presentation!
